PRAISE FOR BIRCH RIVER

As Chairman of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame from 2005 through 2008, and the Executive Producer of its annual induction galas and of three national television (CBC English Network) and network radio broadcast specials (CBC Radio Two and Radio Canada) during those years (2006, 2007 and 2008), I was happy to have worked with David Kitching and Birch River Productions as the Hall of Fame's contract broadcast program producer. These were all independent program productions with David in charge of all facets of administration, production, execution and delivery, and in the case of the 2008 TV program, financing as well. On behalf of the Hall of Fame, I played a financing and supervisory role in connection with David's duties and activities, and exercised approvals over all aspects of the program production and with respect to our dealings with the CBC. I can not say enough about, and have nothing but the highest praise for David's work associated with these events and broadcast properties.

These three galas were all high profile industry events recognizing and featuring the inductions of Leonard Cohen, Anne Murray and Gilles Vignault in 2006, Joni Mitchell, Jean-Pierre Ferland in 2007 and Paul Anka, Claude Dubois and Oscar Peterson in 2008. They were large-budget productions featuring tribute performances of the inductees' works by the cream of English and French Canadian and international performers. The live radio broadcasts, and the TV programs which were edited, mixed and packaged over night for next day national TV broadcast, were always Professionally produced and delivered on time and on budget thanks to David's skill on the floor and his artistic sensitivity. He attracted the loyalty and best efforts of the top above the line directors and writers as well as the best below the line crew and department heads in the Canadian TV business. He knows and has worked with them all, and he brought the best to the job for these programs.

His knowledge of music is extensive and his 'touch' with his music directors and the performing talent was the subject of universal praise in the back stage corridors. The artists were all comfortable with David. There were multiple Gemini Award nominations associated with all of the TV programs, and K.D. Lang's performance of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in 2006 and Measha Brueggergosman's performance of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now in 2007 were each recognized with the Gemini Award for Best Musical Performance of the year. A most deserving and rewarding outcome and a source of pride for everyone directly and indirectly associated with those performances, including David. — Peter Steinmetz, Past Chair / Executive Producer,

When The Globe and Mail secured the rights to host the federal leaders’ debate on the economy, there was only one professional we turned to. David Kitching is a deeply respected professional who turned our evening into magical television. His work gave the audience just what they needed – an intimate, warm studio setting that allowed the past and current prime ministers to debate their points in an appropriate setting - and the set direction also enhanced our brand. As the moderator of the debate, the event was incredibly smooth and the technical apparatus was superior to anything any other broadcaster has done for a debate. — David Walmsley,
Editor-In-Chief, The Globe and Mail

David Kitching has produced the show for the Waterkeeper Gala for five years. His role starts at the beginning of the event-planning process and runs right to the end of the event. He handles almost all aspects of the live stage show, including leading the team that helped the Waterkeeper Gala become one of the best charity events in the country.

David is professional and effective. He instills confidence in everyone who works with him, and has been a big part of Waterkeeper's success. — Mark Mattson, President, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper (in response to Lake Ontario Waterkeepers’ Galas, 2011 – 2016)

You know David…when you agree to do these things, you never quite know what you’re getting yourself into…but this was really good! Congratulations on a great show!

Last night’s tribute on Global was like watching my life unfold before me! And where did you find all that footage? Great research! I am very pleased – be proud of your work – it’s extremely well done. — Norman Jewison, Filmmaker (in response to “Norman Jewison: A Legacy Celebrated” TV special, 1999)
